II. Designing Custom AI Assistants

Overview
Many health professions educators are interested in using Custom GPTs and AI assistants, but are unsure how to design them responsibly, align them with educational goals, or make them useful beyond simple content generation. This immersive two-day online workshop is designed to help educators move from idea to implementation through a structured, pedagogy-informed, and hands-on design process.
Participants will bring an educational challenge from their own context and work step by step to design a functional Custom GPT or AI assistant that supports teaching, assessment, feedback, curriculum development, evaluation, or scholarly work.
Led by Drs. Nehal Khamis and Belinda Chen from Johns Hopkins University, the course combines practical AI design, responsible use principles, and health professions education expertise. Participants will learn to apply the BUILDS framework, a structured methodology developed by Dr. Khamis to support responsible, pedagogy-informed Custom GPT design.
The BUILDS framework has already been used to guide the development of more than 15 functional Custom GPTs for health professions education, with applications across multiple U.S. universities.
No coding or prior AI experience is required.
